September 28: Bangkok - The Last Day

 Royal Palace & Reclining Buddha

We began our last day as we've started all days, with breakfast downstairs.  And today, for the last time we were able to enjoy the large buffet by looking out over the water.  We've so enjoyed while in Bangkok our transportation by boat along the river rather than by bus.  We met in the lobby at 8am for our final excursion as we headed to the Royal Palace - ironically by bus :)  Our guides "Pete" and "Jay" both said that if you visit Thailand, you haven't really seen the country unless you visit the Royal Palace here in Bangkok.  And while I might have debated that prior to going, after we walked around for a couple hours, I would say it is a MUST see to any visit to SE Asia!  The first thing you learn is that they dug a tunnel beneath the road five years ago and it's a huge, tiled area....but what is interesting is that they found all kinds of artifacts buried there which are now on display.  The second thing that you discover is that the amount of temples and structures adorned in jewels and 14K gold is just mind boggling.  You could spend quite a while on each structure admiring the fine detail put into the decorations and learning all the symbolism, but they are all over the place.  It's just stunning.

THAT is how you start the day
You emerge from the tunnel and all you can see is one structure after another
These fully intact ancient structures are some of the things found below the tunnel

Temples everywhere
The mausoleums are adorned with demons & monkeys to protect them

Then you arrive at the "Emerald Buddha."  The story behind this is that it was discovered over 1000 years ago by a Buddhist monk.  But at the time it was covered in plaster and seemed like any other Buddha statute.  Then one day a part of the plaster chipped off and revealed a brilliant green color.  The monk mistakenly told the king he'd found an emerald Buddha and it was moved to the palace where it was revealed to be made of jade.  It is housed in it's own temple and sit high upon a "throne."  What's interesting is, as you can see below, the Buddha has three different outfits, one for each season of the Thai year.  And ONLY the king can change the outfit!

The "Emerald Buddha" in each of his three ceremonial outfits

But here's what most amazing.  You look at these photos - as we did - and you assume it's a large statute, right?  Then you walk into the temple.....

Looking into the temple and you get your first glimpse of the "Emerald Buddha" (left).  You get a better idea of his size on the right.  NOTE:  This was shot outside the temple as photography is forbidden inside.

He's only about three feet tall and when you see him perched up there it's so amazing he's so tiny!  Once we returned outside, put our shoes back on and looked around - even more stunning, glittering structures.

One of the many towering domes glittering in the sun

Finally as the sun blazed down on us we'd reach the end of the adventure inside the magnificent palace.  A short walk to the bus and then a short drive to the temple of the "Reclining Buddha."  As we walked the grounds here there were many small pavilions, statutes and structures.  We went through a gate and then were given a green canvas bag to put our shoes in.  Inside the "Reclining Buddha" temple where you're told he's huge....but he's not huge - he's H-U-G-E.  The best shot is from his feet.  And you'll note on his feet the detail, even of his toe-prints - all inlaid with mother-of-pearl that had to be carved and inserted into the statute.  The second photo you can get some kind of sense of how enormous he is!

Truly (as they say here), "OH MY BUDDHA!"

We returned to the hotel about 11:45am and Kim and I took the boat down the river to the mall for a light lunch overlooking the river.  Spent the afternoon recovering from the walking (about three miles) in the heat & humidity, and then began the final packing process for the long journey home tomorrow.  Had one last night out/dinner with Val & John before bidding them a fond farewell with the promise of keeping in touch and trying to find an adventure we can share in the not too distant future.

Thanks for following along!  We'll be back on the adventure trail in December when we head to the Christmas Markets along the Elbe River with Viking!

September 27: Bangkok Canal Cruise

 Happy Birthday Kim!
Bangkok Cruising

It was "interesting" this morning because after Kim opened the birthday card I gave her she called her twin sister Karrie to wish her a happy birthday but it was only 6:30pm the day before their birthday because of the time change here in SE Asia :)  Since Kim's last birthday we have cruised thru France to the French Riviera...experienced the magic of Harry Potter World.....saw the Kentucky Derby winner race in the Florida Derby....watched our Florida Panthers win their second Stanley Cup....cruised the stunning glaciers of Alaska.....visited wineries in Napa Valley....and now traveled through fascinating Southeast Asia visiting Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand!

After breakfast the group met in the lobby and our Viking guides took us on a canal cruise through Bangkok for a little over two hours.  It was interesting to see along the waterfront the luxury hotels alongside temples, alongside such poor living homes.  The "big stop" of the morning was at the Wat Arun temple where we explored around the grounds for about 45 minutes.  The Buddhist temple name translates to the "Temple of Dawn."  They are uncertain when it was built but it was at least in the early 1600's.  The tallest tower is 270 feet tall and there are four levels that can be accessed by steep stair cases.  But tourists can only now go to the second level due to several accidents years ago.  It was an impressive temple for sure!

All aboard!
And we're off

Are we in Amsterdam?  :)

This afternoon.....there was nothing planned or offered by Viking.  But in one of the most unique things we've encountered in our many travels, the hotel offered some excursions - complimentary to guests.  So Val & John signed the four of us up on one Kim had mentioned seeing.  We met "Mu" - our guide - in the lobby at 1:30 and the nine of us headed out by boat (everyone seems to travel by boat, and it's so much more convenient!).  He took us first to a local temple that is to honor turtles!  There he gave each of us a long stick and some raw meat and we fed the huge turtles in the pond.  They were most appreciative.  And then walked a short distance to a local gentleman who's specialty is paper-mâché - and he is known for his work with "pigs" because of a local legend about them and a nearby temple.  First he showed us how to make them and then he had four pigs ready and waiting for us to uniquely decorate.  What was most ironic for Kim and I is that on nearly every trip we try to find a Christmas ornament from our trip.  We've yet to find one on this trip with only a single day left.  These pigs......are designed to be kept and used as Christmas ornaments!  And to further personalize "our pig" he wrote our last name in Thai on our pig.  We LOVED that the tour was all about local life!  A really cool afternoon - you just never know what you're going to experience all over the world!

Our uniquely designed pig - perhaps you recognize the colors of the sleeve on a Florida Panthers jersey (despite the shaky hand that painted it and the running paint LOL)
They found it amusing we asked for the personalization on the pig's rear :)
Our personalized pig!

We went back to dinner at the mall and found a nice Italian place.  John, Val and I got our meals and then out came a waiter with a gigantic cheese wheel on a cart to prepare Kim's meal in front of her.  Was really cool and we all enjoyed our meals.  Then when we returned to our room, the hotel had delivered a birthday cake for Kim.  What a wonderful day!
Tableside prep!
The birthday girl had a great day xxxooo
Just a really nice touch :)

September 26: Travel to Thailand

 Bangkok Arrival

Today was a travel day and it was nearly an all-day adventure in spite of the flight only being an hour and ten minutes.  We were up and out the Saigon hotel at 8am for departure at the airport.  Once inside the airport our guide escorted us to the correct check-in counter where we had to have not only our passports, but our Vietnam E-visas.  Checked our bags and headed to passport control.  Again, we had to have all the documentation.  Then we had to clear security and eventually arrived at our gate.  In an interesting twist, we "boarded" by having our boarding passes checked then got on a bus and drove for a good ten minutes to the other side of the airport and out onto the tarmac where we walked outside, and up a portable staircase to our plane.  The flight itself was uneventful - interesting they served a full, hot meal in the short flight!  Landed and had to be processed through the entry passport/arrival gate where we needed our passports and our E-arrival form for Thailand.  There we also were fingerprinted in order to clear the security.  The Viking instructions were very specific and clear to find "Exit B" and then "Door 6."  Right away, John, Valerie, Kim and I saw one of our guests heading to the exit marked with an eight-foot high "C."  Oh my Buddha!  The rest of us exited properly and immediately found our Viking hosts.  Within about ten minutes the other couple was spotted wandering around down the hall.  WOW.

Ready for takeoff on Vietnam Air
Our seats were in Row 37 of 38 :O
Safe & sound at Bangkok airport

The drive to the hotel took over an hour and along the way we got to see a lot of unusual architecture in downtown Bangkok.  Once we arrived at our hotel, it was even better than advertised.  Quickly checked in and were whisked to our enormous room on the 20th floor with a panoramic view of the riverfront.  Viking knows how to pick luxury hotels!  We did find out upon arrival today that because of traffic and the distance to the airport we will be leaving the hotel at 3:30am on Monday for our long flight home!  As they say here, "Oh my Buddha!"

The "Leggo Building" - reportedly on the top floor is a glass floor allowing you to look straight down....uh, no

Not a bad view, eh?
Welcome to Bangkok, Thailand.....a new country for us!

At 5:30 we met John & Val downstairs.  We'd been told that the mall, just a five minute walk away had good restaurants on the upper level.  So you might be saying, "you went to Thailand and went to the mall?"  Oooooooooh my friends, this is far from "a mall" - just unbelievably big and sooooooo many stores, food places - the entire first floor is "street vendor" food, inside!  Went to the top level and again, so many choices.  But a place that was outdoors, overlooking the river had been recommended so we went there.  Had an amazing meal and the view - WOW!  A great introduction to Thailand!

HUGE fountain on the top level with water raining down from the ceiling!

Or how about some roasted gator?
